My passion for jewelry started late in my life with a necklace made of a fiber-like plant named Golden Grass that is originally from Brazil. Getting to know the history behind that piece and all lives that are touched by its powerful shine made me want to be part of this chain that connects and empowers women and men through their craft.
I founded Colors of Brazil in 2012. It started with a store on Etsy and I have been there since 2013 with more than 1000 sales, and this success lead me to have my own website. I have also been participating in Festivals and Craft Shows since 2014.
Creating jewelry that have as main material nature is a process of discovering the beauty nature can provide. Nowadays you will find in my jewelry nuts, a variety of seeds, fiber, wood, shells all mixed with high quality components to bring the best for you.
Opening my own website has been a dream for a long time, but I have always pushed it back. Now it is here! Thanks for joining us, and I hope you love our jewelry with the same passion that I love making them.
Because, through my jewelry, someone's dream can come true.
What is Golden Grass
In the Brazilian state of Tocantis there is a region called Jalapão, where it is possible to admire endless expanses of gold fields. We are not talking about fields of nuggets, but about the Golden Grass a plant also called vegetable gold, which arises spontaneously in a single area in the world. The first news of this fiber dates back to around 1500 when the Portuguese landed in Porto Seguro and, going into the Brazilian hinterland, they found the Golden Grass, thinking they had finally found the gold they were looking for so much.
THE GOLDEN GRASS
GOLDEN GRASS is a natural fiber, which initially has a green color and which after a year of maturation takes on a golden color. The plant must not be picked when it is not yet ripe, as it would lose the brightness that distinguishes it, nor when the color burns tending to red. The mature fiber consists of a rosette of leaves, close to the surface of the soil and during the harvest (from September to November), care is taken not to uproot it, while the seeds are left on the ground to renew production.
HOW IT WORKS
The processing is carried out by the artisans and lasts a few days. First it is washed and then it is kept at rest to allow it to dry. Once dried, the stems are selected and classified by type: the fine golden grass is the most precious and is used for jewelry, while the thicker and longer golden grass is ideal for making bags and vases.
How to work with golden grass is handed down from generation to generation through two methods: sewing, which incorporates the ancient traditions of weaving vegetable fibers, in which the plant is immersed in water to increase the coefficient of elasticity; the wire technique, in which the stems of the golden grass cover the metal wires so that any shape can be obtained while preventing it from deforming.
Golden Grass is protected by Brazilian legislation and worked with care by the communities in the region. All this allows these populations to carry on a sustainable economy, without exploiting resources.
JEWELRY
Golden Grass is lightweight, durable, flexible and naturally golden! It is mainly used for the creation of jewelry, thanks to the bright beauty of the color, to its resistance to water and at the time. It is also used for many other products.
